The vision to build a Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Ado-Ekiti came from the reality of the woeful state of maternal deaths in Nigeria. Statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that Nigeria accounts for 20% of Global Maternal Deaths whereas the population of Nigeria is about 2.64% of the World population.
This is a challenging situation for which I will like to focus on and devote attention to till there is measurable and sustained change over time in the health of mothers and their babies starting from Ekiti State Nigeria where I come from originally.
I am a trained obstetrician and gynaecologist and a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons. I have had opportunity to serve in the Nigerian Air Force commanding NAF hospitals in Jos, Port Harcourt and Benin City in Nigeria. Serving in these three capacities while I was in the military, enriched my understanding of the state of health in Nigeria and factors that could contribute to poor health outcomes. The committees include ; Fake and counterfeit medicines – for the Benue State Government; Flying Doctor service – for the River State government and illegal private health establishment for -Edo State government at various times. – all in Nigeria. Presently, I work as a GP in Western Australia.
Maternal mortality rate in Nigeria is about 800 deaths per 100,000 live births. Even by African standards, this is unacceptable. Furthermore, 70% of medical bills are from “out of pocket’ payment as National Health Insurance coverage cover less than 5 % of the population. When you combine that with illegal and substandard health practices, the issue of fake and counterfeit drugs, lack of access to good health care in remote communities, you have a situation where poorly regulated health standards and lack of affordable and accessible good quality health care for the pregnant mother results in poor health outcomes for mothers and their babies.
This Project is to build a modern Secondary Care Hospital for Maternal and Child Health in order to complement the Health Care delivery effort in Ekiti State of Nigeria. Presently, Land has been purchased for the registered hospital- “Our Baby Hospital Ltd” and all consultancy fees having been paid. Government approval for the construction phase of the project has now been approved. The sum of about $150,000 USD has so far been spent for land purchase and paperwork for the building approval up to this stage.
Every fund donated will assist us greatly to commence construction and also equip the Hospital as follows:
Stand with “Our Baby Hospital” project by donating to this course so that together we can complete the hospital project and also equip it. Any amount you can afford will be most appreciated. Your donation of cash, (or equippment) will be highly appreciated. In return, we shall have every donor’s name on our Roll of Honour which will be placed at the Hospital reception when completed. God Bless you.
